Campaign Finance Reports

The winners of the semiannual report

By Connor Brown and Cyndy Rees

It is time for Campaign Finance reporting, which means everyone’s a winner. At least that’s what everyone claims.  Every campaign finance deadline, one can expect their inbox to overflow with press releases from campaigns all claiming their numbers show how strong their candidacy is. If they are the highest, the talking points are obvious, if they are not, then that’s because they just entered the race, or have more individual donors, or have been focusing on meeting voters, not fundraisers. Take your pick.

So to cut through the PR clutter, 3rd Rail breaks down what you need to know about the key 2018 races based on today’s campaign finance filing deadline.

GOVERNOR:

Cycle Contributions

$2,027,584.03

Jon Husted

$1,264,555.59

Mike DeWine

$639,573.12

Mary Taylor

$576,093.76

Jim Renacci

Cash on Hand

$4,674,050.87

Mike DeWine

$4,379,103.99

Jim Renacci

$4,282,389.37

Jon Husted

$436,883.97

Mary Taylor

What they are saying:

“The momentum and grassroots support from across Ohio has lined up firmly behind Jon Husted, as evidenced by the fact that other candidates in this race were forced to put in their own money in order to catch up." – Joshua Eck, a spokesman for Jon Husted

"Mike DeWine is the most popular conservative leader.  Our campaign holds massive leads in all categories - most importantly Mike DeWine is supported by the people that matter - voters.” – Dave Luketic, DeWine campaign manager

“I’m in it to win it in this race because I know that with a new brand of conservative leadership in Columbus we can restore growth, opportunity and promise to our state—and I’ll stop at nothing to win this election and get the job done for all Ohioans as Governor." - Jim Renacci

“I am all in and in it to win,” Taylor said. “Today’s campaign finance report tells me that Ohioans who want to see a candidate with vision, energy and ability and who can win next November are in it with me.” – Mary Taylor

August Winner: SOS Jon Husted

Jon Husted won the day not only because he hauled in the most cash, but because he was the only candidate not to put his own money into the race. Both DeWine and Renacci loaned themselves over one million dollars, while Mary Taylor had her husband and sons all max out to her campaign.

As one astute Husted supporter tweeted: “For perspective, @JonHusted essentially doubled, tripled, & quadrupled the fundraising haul of the other 3 candidates.”

But DeWine was prepared for such a day, and blunted today’s filings by touting a newly released poll that showed his campaign with an “insurmountable lead” in name recognition. The DeWine camp was quick to point out that DeWine still wins even among voters who have a favorable opinion of Jon Husted, blunting any claim that Husted’s name ID was increasing.

Nonetheless, the day belongs to Mr. Husted. But it’s clear DeWine is still the man to beat, while Renacci will use his deep pockets to make the race interesting. The Lt. Governor on the other hand, had little to celebrate and it’s clear the gap is widening between her and the other three GOP campaigns.

SPEAKER/OHROC:

What they are saying:

"Since returning to the Ohio House in January, I have been humbled by the outpouring of support and encouragement from around Capitol Square and across Ohio. My focus has been and continues to be helping mentor current and future legislators so that we can meet the challenges of today and lay the foundation for a brighter tomorrow." – Larry Householder

(No statement or response to our inquiries for comment from other candidates.)

August Winner: Larry Householder

In the race to replace term-limited Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, former Speaker Larry Householder came out on top with a strong showing in contributions received, besting his main rival by nearly $250,000 dollars and even the current speaker by nearly $200,000.

However, Speaker Cliff Rosenberger is a staunch ally of Representative Ryan Smith and also controls the purse strings of OHROC, which showed it collected nearly $2.8 million dollars this cycle. Representative Smith was the top contributor to OHROC with $490,000, besting even Speaker Rosenberger’s $460,000. (Representative Householder contributed $53,500 during the same cycle.)

No doubt Representative Smith will concede that as Chairman of the Finance Committee, he had little time to dedicate to fundraising. Buy that excuse or not, the results from today show that the former Speaker has the upper hand in race for the Speaker’s chair.

Secretary of State:

What they are saying:

"I am humbled by the groundswell of support we have gotten.  It has been 11 weeks since I announced and I have raised over $400,000 in just the last four weeks.  I am ready to do the hard work to make sure Republicans control this office going forward and that is my focus."  - Frank LaRose

"The reports are as expected.  I am so proud to have spent my years in the legislature supporting my fellow colleagues in their campaigns to reach the largest Republican majority caucus in history with 66 members.  It is early in this race.  A recent poll shows that 68% of those polled did not know either candidate in the Secretary of State race. I have my work cut out for me.  I am proud of the numerous endorsements I have received for my campaign.  I look forward to the challenges ahead with enthusiasm. I am thankful for every contribution that came in for me." - Representative Dorothy Pelanda

August Winner: Frank LaRose

State Senator Frank LaRose got off to a great start for his bid for Ohio Secretary of State. Despite formally announcing his campaign a full month after Representative Pelanda, Senator LaRose pulled in big donations from many top GOP donors.

State Treasurer:

What they are saying:

"I am at the same time humbled and thrilled with the strong support our campaign has received thus far. I look forward to continuing to introduce myself to the citizens of this great state - discussing the issues that matter to them and sharing my vision for the Treasurer of State's Office." – Robert Sprague

“Since the announcement of my candidacy in late March, I have traveled all over Ohio meeting and talking with Republicans”’ said Mingo.  “The support I have received from GOP activists and donors from every corner of our great state means so much to me and demonstrates that they believe it’s time for a new generation of conservative leadership in Ohio. I look forward to continuing to travel to every county in Ohio and bringing my message of financial stability and economic growth for the citizens of Ohio.” – Clarence Mingo

August Winner: Robert Sprague

A strong showing by the Republican from Findlay. While Mingo has more total donations (357), Robert Sprague’s 282 donations bested Mingo by more than double. Sprague’s campaign got a big boost from some big hometown donors, as most of his top donors hail from Findlay.
