Ohio Legislative Candidate Profile:  Sara Carruthers, House District 51

1.   Tell us about yourself?

I have lived in Hamilton for 55 years and went to public school here. I attended Adams, Harding and Taft.  I have 10 (going on 11) year old twins, Elizabeth and Rogue.  I live with my father (87), Ralph Carruthers in the same home I grew up in.  I attended Miami University and was a voice performance/ theatre major.  I am a member of Delta Zeta Sorority Alpha Chapter.  I left college to work for PM Magazine at WKRC TV.  I worked for all three stations, WKRC TV, WKRC radio and WKRQ and left as National Sales Manager of both radio stations.  I then went on to sell advertising for TCI Cable. In my spare time, I worked for TvHAMILTON and eventually went on to work full time at TvHAMILTON as Public Relations Director and Host.  I’m an Episcopalian with a strong Christian faith.  I have my CCW and I believe a heartbeat is a life.

2.  Why did you decide to run for the Ohio House of Representatives?

I decided to run for State Representative a while ago but I wanted my family to be properly set for my being in and out and busy.  Once I got everything in place I knew I could do it.  I don’t feel our area has been represented well for some time now and I know I can do a better job for this area and I intend to do everything I possibly can to prove it. We need a fresh perspective and I know I can do that.

3 &4  What are the key issues voters are concerned about in your district?  What will be your priorities if elected to the House?

Key issues for me are education, job training and bringing respect back to the Statehouse.  We need new ideas for our drug problems and since the Parkland shooting, I’m learning about things we could do to prevent such an occurrence here and laws that could be made better. These issues are what I’m also hearing the people want to work on.

5. How do you feel about term limits?

I think term limits are needed.  I’m not a politician so I probably have a different view but without term limits you get career politicians and they are in it for a whole other reason.

6.  What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I like to do ANYTHING with my kids and my dad.   We have a lot of fun and his perspective is wonderful for my children.  He is a Marine and they love to hear his stories.  Other than that, I love to swim, I have horses so I love to ride, I read and do needlepoint.  I honestly don’t have a boring moment.  Two kids keep you hopping.

7.  What is the last book you read?

The last book I read was “The Last Mrs. Parrish” by Liv Constantine.  It was fabulous so I’m having a hard time finding a new one, but I’m starting to get into “Little Fires Everywhere” by Celeste Ng.   I love to read and really enjoy thrillers.

8. Why should voters elect you to the House of Representatives?

Why should voters elect me?  Because I’m the real thing.  I’m not in this for a pay check or health care.  I don’t owe anyone anything.  I’m running for the reasons people should run for office... to help my community and to make people’s lives better. What you see is what you get with me, I’m definitely not phony.

9.  Is there aanything else you would like to add?

Just that I can make this promise to the people of the 51st district, I will never embarrass my family, myself, my community, or my party.
